Family-Centered Care and Listening to the Parent Perspective
In this unit, we consider parents’ perspectives as viewed from several sources, including a research article, ethnographic videos, and a parent’s personal observation. A hypothetical “family journey” includes many key events – students will be encouraged to put themselves in parents’ shoes and envision their challenges. The focus then broadens to consider the clinician’s impact upon a family’s journey, specifically by developing essential communication skills. Three communication tools are presented with practice opportunities.
