Ida in China: Ida Fellow Xu Fei Presents Tools at Conference in Zhejiang Province

By Timothy Cooke

As one Chinese proverb states: "Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still."

Ida fellows are certainly not standing still. Each week, members of the Ida community are raising awareness of patient-centered care methods around the world. By presenting at conferences and workshops, community members help  inform new professional groups of Ida's valuable tools and educational resources.

In June, Ida Fellow Xu Fei gave a presentation on the Ida tools to over 50 hearing care professionals at the annual conference of the Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation Association of Zhejiang Province in China. Keeping to Ida's focus on interactive learning, he utilized one of Ida's ethnographic videos to facilitate a discussion of the human dynamics of hearing loss. Conference participants were a mix of hearing care professional working in hospitals, hearing aid consultants, hearing aid dispensers, and audiology students.

Xu Fei is a lecturer and ENT specialist at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, one of the only schools specializing in hearing and speech science in China. He attended the Ida Institute's first seminar series in 2008 on Defining Hearing.
