Our student helper and anthropology student Therese Kjellerup Thorstholm has written an article in the January 2011 issue of the Danish magazine Hørelsen (Hearing) about the lack of hearing loss prevention programs targeted at young people in the Danish society. She exemplifies how sound from MP3 players is something that we can control ourselves unlike [...] can be, they still turn up the volume. The lack of initiatives of prevention is surprising compared to how many published researches show the increase of young people with hearing loss caused by mp3 players. The workshop was received favorably and the participants were enthusiastic about the aspects of the tool that would facilitate their telling their personal stories related hearing loss to the audiologist. Development on the tool continues – also incorporating the feed-back from testing [...] within their social context, to hear the patient’s unique story and to formulate positive management strategies for different social situations together with the patient. The two-day panel session, co-sponsored by the University of Queensland, explored opportunities to integrate Ida’s innovative education materials and teaching methods into undergraduate and graduate curricula. "Through this process, the Institute hopes to affect positive growth for students and the profession and ultimately, to deliver an improved quality of care to people with hearing loss." been working with pediatric hearing care professionals to develop a new IDA tool that will help pediatric audiologists understand the impact of hearing loss from a child´s point of view. The tool will be called “My World” and it will allow pediatric audiologists to explore e.g. home and classroom situations with hearing impaired children through building [...] e.g. figures and furniture and adding them to their own map. The audiologist can then use the map created by the child to open a dialogue about how they communicate and cope in different situations. This can help the audiologist answer a number of questions: How does the child manage technology? How does the child deal with their hearing loss in different [...] different social situations? “When is it easy and when is it difficult?” ‘This has been a very fruitful collaborative effort and the feedback from the try-outs in clinics has been very positive’ said Managing Director, Lise Lotte Bundesen.
