Ida Workshops at SLP and Audiology Focus on Motivation

By Amanda Farah Cox

The Ida Institute participated in the Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Conference (Jornada Fonoaudiológica de Bauru) in Sao Paolo, Brazil, held from 20-23 August. Ida Institute Managing Director Lise Lotte Bunden and Senior Audiologist Melanie Gregory gave presentations and held workshops on Ida Motivational Tools to a multi-disciplinary audience including ENTs, audiologists, nurses, dentists, and speech language pathologists, beginning with a presentation to the Society for Otorhinolaryngoloy in Sao Paulo.

Two full days of workshops followed, facilitated by Bunden and Gregory, as well as two Ida Fellows:  Audiologist Deborah Viviane Ferrari and psychologist Dagma Abramides, both of the University of Sao Paulo Bauru. Ida Tools were taught by Gregory, and both days of workshops used actors to help illustrate the gap between what participants knew about patient centered care and what they actually put into practice, thereby helping them narrow the gap.

For the first day, Ferrari focused on the importance of motivation within healthcare, while Abramides, psychologist, tackled the myths related to managing motivation in the clinic.

The second day focused on patient centered care:  What it means, how to put it into practice, and what participants would like to do to make it happen. Abramides gave a presentation on Brazil’s Unified Healthcare System (Sistema Único de Saúde) and its policy on patient centered care. Participants tried out different activities from Time and Talk and the Change Guide, and were introduced to the Vision 2020 project.

The Ida Institute’s participation was made possible by the generosity of Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo and Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior.
