Cochlear Implant Seminar at Ida Institute

By Amanda Farah Cox

The Ida Institute is looking forward to expanding its work with cochlear implants this year. This will include hosting a seminar, “Successes, Gaps and Challenges in CI Rehabilitation: The CI Journey for Children and Their Families.” The focus of the seminar will be the patient experience, exploring the needs of children with CIs and their families.

The seminar was developed in collaboration with a faculty of internationally respected CI professionals, Christine Yoshinaga-Itano (USA), Lone Percy-Smith (DK), Ruth Bourne (SA) and Sue Archbold (UK).

Discussions and materials will take into consideration not only the shock and grief experienced as a result of the child’s diagnosis of hearing loss, but also the concerns about cochlear implants as a treatment from the surgery through the year-long rehabilitation period. At the seminar, participants will explore the patient journey from the perspectives of both patients and parents as well as professionals including surgeons, ENTs, audiologists and others involved in the child’s rehabilitation.

The goal of the seminar is to identify concrete tools to meet the needs of children with CIs and their families. To do this, invited participants will explore the relationship between patients and clinicians, investigate how CI rehabilitation works today in different parts of the world and identify critical gaps, and define what a successful journey would look like from the perspectives of patients, families, and professionals.
