GROUPToolFeaturedatGothenburgUniversity
Ida Fellow Maria Hoff recently used the Ida Institute’s GROUP tool to introduce the concept of group AR to students in her rehabilitation and counseling course at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
For students in the BSc audiology program, Maria Hoff’s course marks their introduction to rehabilitation and counseling methods. Many of the students have yet to conduct an externship in a clinic and are eager to see how the relationship between patients and clinicians takes shape in real-life.
To expose students to group AR, Maria dedicated an entire lecture of the counseling course to group aural rehabilitation. She utilized the GROUP tool to show them what a group AR session really looks like.
“The videos on the clinician, patient, and student perspective of group AR in the GROUP tool...

NewIdaTool:TimeandTalk
The Ida Institute would like to announce the release of its newest online tool for hearing care professionals: Time and Talk.
Developed in collaboration with Ida Fellows Lesley Jones, Amr El Rafaie, and Joy Rosenberg, Time and Talk is a method for teaching communication skills to practicing and student hearing care professionals. The method uses scenarios and role-plays of clinical situations to teach how to integrate process skills with practical clinical skills in the audiological appointment. Participants learn communication skills as they attempt to conduct tasks and fulfill requirements during mock consultation sessions.
"Often audiologists are worrying about the time that they have available to them and the number of tasks that they have to complete, because they have to do...

TampaVAHospitalIntegratesMotivationToolsintoPatientForm
The Audiology Section at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Florida, has integrated the Ida Motivation Tools into their case history form. This represents an innovative way of integrating the Ida tools into current clinical procedures.
Questions from the Line and the Circle are found on the case history form that is mailed to every audiology patient at the Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, Florida. The patient fills out the form at home before their appointment and is encouraged to consult with their spouse and family as they answer the questions.
At the consultation session, audiologists ask follow-up questions to explore why the patient answered the questions as they did. This discussion helps shed light on the patient's motivation and ambivalence to taking action on their...

UtilizingIdaVideostoDemonstratetheValueofCounseling
In the March/April edition of Audiology Today, Ida Fellows John Greer Clark and Kristina English analyze missed opportunities during consultations that often lead patients to take a 'less-than-favorable' view of the services provided.
Clark and English contend that instead of being an add-on service, audiologic counseling should be viewed as a key component to service delivery that can improve patient perceptions of their care and heighten the success of the rehabilitation process. In this way, patient-sensitive conversations play a key part in effective counseling. They can help professionals show their acceptance of patients as they manage their personal hearing loss journey. These conversations also can include reflective listening to get a more well-rounded understanding of the...

Plural Publishing recently released the Second Edition of Adult Audiologic Rehabilitation edited by Ida Fellows Joseph Montano and Jaclyn B. Spitzer. This impressive volume covers topics that represent the current state of AR, including the psychological impact of hearing loss, assessment strategies, current technologies, treatment methodologies, and research needs.
The book places a powerful emphasis on the information necessary to develop excellence in counseling and to apply a client-centered approach to AR.
"An underlying concept of this text is that AR is an expanding aspect of our discipline" states Montano and Spitzer in the book's introduction. "The role of technology in the current practice of AR is apparent, but, as we see in our text, it should be only a means, rather than...
