The Ida Institute would like to announce the release of its newest online tool for hearing care professionals: Time and Talk.
Developed in collaboration with Ida Fellows Lesley Jones, Amr El Rafaie, and Joy Rosenberg, Time and Talk is a method for teaching communication skills to practicing and student hearing care professionals. The method uses scenarios and role-plays of clinical situations to teach how to integrate process skills with practical clinical skills in the audiological appointment. Participants learn communication skills as they attempt to conduct tasks and fulfill requirements during mock consultation sessions.
"Often audiologists are worrying about the time that they have available to them and the number of tasks that they have to complete, because they have to do screening, testing, mold fitting, so there is a lot of pressure on them to complete a number of tasks within that time," states Lesley Jones, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Social Science at Hull York Medical School. "We have been working to develop this new tool, which is specifically about audiology but which provides a framework for looking at how communication skills are carried out.
The tool contains a workshop program that guides you through activities and role-play exercises that you can conduct with students and professionals. To demonstrate how you can run the workshop, the website contains short video clips from a real-life Time and Talk workshop with a group of audiology students from the University of Bristol.
Time and Talk is based on the Hull York Medical School modified version of the Calgary-Cambridge Integrated Clinical Method, which is widely used in medical education. By learning through practice, observation, and feedback, learners are given an opportunity to work on the challenges and skills present in everyday practice.
