Tinnitus is a difficult topic for patients and hearing care professionals alike. For people who live with tinnitus, the ringing in their ears is a constant trial that can put their mental well-being at risk. It is often too much of a distraction for patients to register that they also have a hearing loss. For hearing care professionals, there is the frustration that they won’t be able to offer a cure to their patients for such a distressing condition.
The Ida Institute is making our first foray into this topic with our upcoming seminar, The Tinnitus Challenge, in Skodsborg, Denmark, this December. We have invited an international group of participants to share their insight from their different disciplines as clinicians, ENTs, and researchers. We’re looking forward to hearing about their experiences both with patients and in some cases personal experiences with tinnitus and how can affect a person’s daily life.

As part of the seminar, we will be sharing new ethnographic films, recently recorded by Ida Senior Anthropologist Hans Henrik Philipsen at a VA hospital in Florida. We are looking forward to tackling this challenging topic, and to sharing outcomes for tinnitus management with the Ida community.
