Ida at the Upcoming 2011 BAA Conference

By Timothy Cooke

The Ida Institute will participate in the upcoming 2011 British Academy of Audiology (BAA) Conference: “Inspired by Change”. The conference will take place from 9 - 11 November in Llandudno, Wales.

We are looking forward to a very successful conference. We plan to staff a booth, launch a new tool, help moderate conference sessions, and lead two interactive workshops.

With our first workshop, we will launch our new “Living Well with Hearing Loss” counseling tool. The new tool aims to help audiologists better understand how hearing loss affects patient communication in daily life. This will in turn help audiologists develop strategies and solutions for effective communication. Workshop participants will explore the new tool and learn how to use it in practice. Kirsten Lauritsen from the Ida Institute will present.

The second workshop will focus on group audiologic rehabilitation (AR). The benefits of offering group AR are well known, but many audiologists don’t offer them. The workshop will help participants develop and implement their own group AR program. Jill Preminger, Jane Madell, Sam Trychin, and Hans Henrik Philipsen (Ida Institute) will present.

At the Ida booth, we hope to introduce more people to our tools, activities, and online offerings. Our new “Living Well with Hearing Loss” counseling tool will be on display and for sale. Visitors can also pick up some of our other tools for free. Computers will be available for guests to browse Ida’s tools and sign-up to our online community. Ida specialists will be on-hand throughout the day to address questions and discuss our work.

We are eager to use our time at the conference to listen and learn. The focus of this year’s conference, managing change and changing perspectives, is very relevant to Ida’s current work. Our upcoming seminar series aims to identify the realities facing audiologists, explore the barriers to change, and craft a way to move ahead. It will be very helpful to learn more about the current trends and changes taking place in audiology today.

Ida played a role in developing the focus and theme for this year’s conference. Melanie Gregory (Ida’s senior audiologist) and Melanie Ferguson (Clinical Scientist and Lead Researcher in Auditory Habilitation at the National Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing, United Kingdom) developed the program for this year’s conference. They have ensured that the conference offers a healthy balance among the technology, scientific, and rehabilitation areas within the field of audiology.

We look forward to an engaging and thought-provoking conference. If you are attending, please be sure to stop by our booth and say hello.
