New Ida University Course Module: An Introduction to Tinnitus and Its Management

By Clint McLean

Our free university course just got even better. We’ve added an important new module called an Introduction to Tinnitus and Its Management. Designed for educators, the module combines authoritative content about tinnitus with Ida’s expertise in person-centered care. The module is easily incorporated into curricula with the entire Ida University Course or on its own. It includes lesson plans, handouts, PowerPoint slides, and ethnographic videos to make lessons for the next generation of audiologists interesting and effective.

The Tinnitus module provides a broad introduction to tinnitus and describes evidence-based management approaches, while staying mindful of person-centered care throughout.

Units 1 and 2 cover the epidemiology of tinnitus within the context of public health and highlight warning signs that professionals need to be aware of as possible symptoms for even more serious conditions.

Units 3 and 4 explore popular models that explain tinnitus as a symptom and outline the foundations of a thorough tinnitus assessment. Students will be exposed to various tinnitus case history forms, tinnitus self-report questionnaires, and screening tools that are in use by leading experts and tinnitus treatment centers throughout the world.

Units 5, 6, and 7 delve into tinnitus management approaches and include reviews of the current best evidence for these, as well as ethnographic videos and Ida tools that have been developed to encourage person-centered care during tinnitus consultations.

This module was developed in collaboration with Dr. Amr El Refaie, Audiological Physician and Program Director of the MSc Audiology program at University College Cork, Ireland.
