New Ethnographic Films Share the Patient Perspective on the Hearing Journey

By Amanda Farah Cox

Ida is pleased to share three new ethnographic videos. The videos focus on the experiences of three people with hearing loss and their family members and the difference a person-centered approach has made in their hearing care.

The films look at three individuals at different phases of the their lives who have all experienced hearing loss in a different way: Adrienne, a pensioner whose hereditary hearing loss began in her late 40s; Fay, whose hearing was affected after suffering a head injury on a night out with friends; and Luke, whose hearing was affected after suffering from a virus at age two.

All three subjects had unsatisfactory experiences with their hearing treatment before finding their current audiologist, Bridgitte, who follows a person-centered protocol with her clients. Each discusses how a the person-centered approach helped them find more appropriate assistive technologies, arrive at other strategies to help them cope with their hearing loss, and improved their outlook on their hearing losses.

The videos were filmed to provide insight and points of discussion at our recent seminar, “The Hearing Journey: What Matters to You?” Thank you to Bridgitte Harley for inviting Ida to her clinic and introducing us to her clients, and thank you to Adrienne, Fay, and Luke for being so open and generous with your stories.
