New Ida Tool: Time and Talk

NewIdaTool:TimeandTalk

The Ida Institute would like to announce the release of its newest online tool for hearing care professionals: Time and Talk.

Developed in collaboration with Ida Fellows Lesley Jones, Amr El Rafaie, and Joy Rosenberg, Time and Talk is a method for teaching communication skills to practicing and student hearing care professionals. The method uses scenarios and role-plays of clinical situations to teach how to integrate process skills with practical clinical skills in the audiological appointment. Participants learn communication skills as they attempt to conduct tasks and fulfill requirements during mock consultation sessions.

"Often audiologists are worrying about the time that they have available to them and the number of tasks that they have to complete, because they have to do...

Tampa VA Hospital Integrates Motivation Tools into Patient Form

TampaVAHospitalIntegratesMotivationToolsintoPatientForm

The Audiology Section at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa, Florida, has integrated the Ida Motivation Tools into their case history form. This represents an innovative way of integrating the Ida tools into current clinical procedures.

Questions from the Line and the Circle are found on the case history form that is mailed to every audiology patient at the Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, Florida. The patient fills out the form at home before their appointment and is encouraged to consult with their spouse and family as they answer the questions.

At the consultation session, audiologists ask follow-up questions to explore why the patient answered the questions as they did. This discussion helps shed light on the patient's motivation and ambivalence to taking action on their...

Ida Tools Make Business Sense: A Conversation with David Rist from Hidden Hearing UK

IdaToolsMakeBusinessSense:AConversationwithDavidRistfromHiddenHearingUK

Private hearing health care clinics can benefit significantly by integrating Ida’s Motivation Tools (the Line, the Box, and the Circle) into their daily practice, according to David Rist, Head of Development and Training at Hidden Hearing, a private retailer of hearing instruments and services in the United Kingdom.

According to David Rist, the Motivation Tools can assist both new and experienced dispensers to open meaningful, constructive conversations with their clients. Such conversations can help clients explore personal barriers to taking action and obtaining hearing instruments. In this way, dispensers can actively engage clients and coach them through their change process while demonstrating respect and empathy.

Collaboration Continues: Working Group to Develop Support Materials for the My World Tool

CollaborationContinues:WorkingGrouptoDevelopSupportMaterialsfortheMyWorldTool

The Ida Institute has launched a working group consisting of pediatric audiologists from around the world to create guidance materials for the My World pediatric tool. The support materials will provide helpful suggestions and guidance on how to use the tool in different situations, making the tool even more user-friendly.

The My World pediatric audiology tool helps facilitate an understanding of hearing loss from the child’s point of view. By placing small, movable figures on three boards depicting a school, playground, and home setting, children can externalize their hearing loss and describe communication situations in a concrete fashion with a hearing care professional

Since the launch of the My World tool in December 2011, we have received positive feedback on the tool at workshops...
